We began brewing yerba mate years ago, and the power of this plant has not ceased to amaze us over the years. The distinctive flavor of brewed mate resembles a blend of herbs and grass and the similarity to green tea cannot be mistaken. The flavor was always something special, very agreeable to our palate, and we quickly fell in love.

Creating a product to share first became a task - then an obsession. Different origins of mate, plant or leaf, steeping time and temperatures, adjusting sweetness and acid - so many variables. After dozens of test batches, it's almost complete.

Yerba mate is a natural antioxidant and is loaded with polyphenols and xanthines, along with the trace minerals potassium, magnesium and manganese.  Like many enhanced food and beverages, we boosted the natural antioxidant capacity by infusing our mate with a proprietary blend of organic antioxidants from sea buckthorn, goji berry, beet root and barley grass. This helps all who consume it reduce free radicals and maintain excellent health. 

In the end we think you'll agree - Sunshine Yerba Mate is an amazing tereré that we are more than proud to share with our fellow Californians. 

DOUGLAS MARTIN brewer/mixologist

Chief mate brewer and mixologist Douglas Martin was born in the Chicagoland area where he grew up. After graduating from Purdue University in 1989 he moved to Germany in 1991 to work for his uncle who owned a company that produced soda, water, juices and cider.   Since then, he has been a part of the beverage industry and started his journey on the Central Coast in 2008 when he founded Einhorn Beer Company.

In his free time, he plays and coaches soccer, and hopes to contribute even more to the local community through Sunshine Bottle Works.
